On Saturday, February 21st, nearly 150 people attended our 6th annual audition workshop! This free event not only introduced young actors to the world of the audition process but also gave them the opportunity to meet with the Hairspray creative team. Each group of participants was taught a short dance piece from our choreographers Karen Olson-Russell and David Ponton, learned how to sell 16 bars of an audition song with Adam Roberts, our Associate Music Director, and was given expert advice on cold readings and audition expectations from our Director, Bob Tolaro. Thanks to LBJ High School for hosting the event! ZTP is so happy to offer this unique opportunity and invaluable resource to the Central Texas community. Remember, although it is free to the public, it is not free to produce and your donations will help fund future workshops and events! Donate Today!
Each year, ZTP honors a special group of people for their hard work & dedication to Zilker Theatre Productions and the Zilker Summer Musical. The Bil Pfuderer Award, Outstanding Crew Member Award, John S. Faulk Award and the Deacon Crain Award were presented to these deserving folks on closing night.
The Bil Pfuderer Award
Each year since the mid-eighties, one male and one female ensemble member has been selected to win the Outstanding Ensemble Member Bil Pfuderer Award. The award was created to recognize outstanding ensemble cast. ZTP continues this award as recognition of how important the ensemble is each year not only with their performance, but also being a key factor in keeping alive our proud offstage “Summer Musical Family” environment.
The award was created to recognize someone who has gone beyond what is just required in their role, has shown exemplary helpfulness to others and the show, exhibits consistent professionalism and inspires others through their dedication to the show’s success both on and off stage. It’s not just a popularity contest, rather a way to recognize someone who has continuously inspired others by their example.
2014 Recipients: Grace Morton & Ian J. Bethany

How much is parking? Where do we sit? How tall do the chairs need to be? Can we bring our pets?
These are all common questions about attending the Zilker Summer Musical and the City of Austin has asked us to pass along information on the seating policies at the Beverly S Sheffield Theater.
- To keep The Hillside lush & green, blankets may not be put down before 6pm and plastic tarps are not allowed. Unattended blankets will be lovingly folded by City employees and placed on the wall for pick-up.
- Our ADA accessibility allows for designated seating for our audience members with special needs. The first level (stage level) will be available for these patrons. Please contact us if you feel you will need any special assistance.
- High-backed lawn chairs are allowed against either wall, & lower chairs and blankets can be placed in front of the lighting poles on the 2nd level. A clear walkway on the 2nd level must be maintained at all times.
- ZTP often needs to reserve spaces for our cast members families as well as our donors. Please respect these marked areas.
- Austin in known for it’s friendliness and in order to make the most efficient use of The Hillside we encourage you to place your blankets as close together as possible. Get to know your neighbors! Take up only as much room as you need! Or offer to share with those in less fortunate viewing spots!
- Please leave your pets at home. We have found that the subtleties of musical theatre are lost on most household pets.
- After the curtain call, the actors will line up at the edge of the stage to sign autographs, and have their pictures taken. (Hillside Tip: Bring your own Sharpie marker!). Please remain in front of the stage at all times, & keep a close eye on your children!
- The City of Austin charges $5 per car for parking and there is limited handicapped parking in the lower parking lot.
ZTP and the City of Austin appreciate your help in following these rules. Contact one of our volunteers when you get to The Hillside if you have any questions.

See You On The Hillside!
A warm summer night. An iconic Austin restaurant. Stellar local talent. And a wonderful crowd of ZTP supporters. All came together to mark what we hope will be the first of many future events in which we honor our donors & sponsors. Over 150 people donned their finest “Texas Chic” attire and gathered at Scholz Garten for fajitas, live music and a preview of the 56th annual Zilker Summer Musical, “Oklahoma!” It was a wonderful event that lasted long into the night! A huge thank you goes out to the Zilker Guild for organizing the event and to Cheer Station for donating the sound system. You can see more pictures of the festivities here:
John joined ZTP as a volunteer in 2008 when he came to see the 50th Anniversary musical and noticed the Hillside Theatre needed a great deal of work. A realtor by trade, John had a lot of connections within the community that he leveraged to help build a new bunker for the theatre at no cost to ZTP or the City of Austin Over the past 6 years, John has utilized his expert skills in sales to secure over $600,000 of improvements to the venue through a wonderful private/public partnership with the COA Parks and Recreation Department. Because of John’s tireless efforts to improve the venue, ZTP created the John Faulk Award in 2012 to honor an individual or company that contributes, in partnership with ZTP, to the upkeep and improvements of the city-owned Bevelry S. Sheffield Zilker Hillside Theatre. In 2010, John also began approaching businesses and individuals to sponsor the Annual Summer Musical. He was so successful in raising funds for ZTP that he was hired as a part-time fundraiser the following year. John’s passion for ZTP’s mission has translated into a major increase in revenue year after year. In 2013, John became the Director of Development and Community Affairs, and he continues to supervise venue improvements. John is also a devoted husband, father and grandfather, delivers a mean Elvis impression and has been involved in vocal music all of his life.
